Koki Ake Te Oro

Koki Ake Te Oro is a hīkoi — an act of public art that reclaims space through sound, movement, and presence. This long-form audio poem is part of my wider practice as a performance artist and poet — using public space and creative storytelling to bring ancestral narratives and future visions into the present.

Koki Ake Te Oro began in 2023 as a self-guided, future-set walking tour for The Performance Arcade. In 2024, it returned as a full audio performance in te reo Māori (translated by Watene Kaihau) and English — inviting listeners to walk, feel, and step into a future shaped by tino rangatiratanga. Koki Ake Te Oro honours my Ngāti Haumia tūpuna and imagines the future of Te Aro Pā for our descendants.

“Broughton has a strong vision for the future of her people and their whenua that she expresses through a ten chapter self-guided audio tour to be played while walking along Ara Moana.” Brooke Pou
